MIDDLEBURG HEIGHTS, Ohio – Resumes will be accepted until noon on Feb. 2 for Middleburg Heights residents interested in applying for the open Ward 4 City Council seat.

Candidates must live in Ward 4.

Seven-term Councilman John Grech relinquished the position in December due to health complications experienced after a routine medical procedure last summer. He won re-election unopposed in November.

In compliance with City Charter Section 4.04, and under the guidance of Law Director Santo Incorvaia, City Council during its Jan. 23 meeting voted to enable the formal replacement process to begin.

Council has 30 days to fill the vacancy or Mayor Matt Castelli can appoint someone.

Incorvaia shared details from a required Jan. 4 letter sent to Grech.

“I hope this letter finds you recovering and feeling better daily,” Incorvaia read aloud. “Thank you for letting us know your road to recovery will be longer than expected and that you will not be able to fulfill your term representing City Council Ward 4.

“Middleburg Heights is a better place because of your many years of dedicated and distinguished public service. You will be missed.”

Applications/resumes must be emailed to Clerk of Council Maryann Meola at mmeola@mbhts.com. Submissions received after noon on Feb. 2 will not be considered.

In addition, candidates must be able to attend a 6 p.m. Feb. 5 special City Council meeting at City Hall, where they will have three minutes to present their case for appointment to the vacant Ward 4 seat.
