COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — March Madness is fast approaching and for Ohio sports bettors looking to wager on the basketball tournament, they will not be allowed to bet on players.

The Ohio Casino Control Commission sent an agreement to approve a request from the NCAA to ban betting on college athletes. This would ban sportsbooks from offering bets on college football or basketball players’ individual statistics for games.

In the NCAA’s request to the state of Ohio, they brought up concerns that pertain to college player prop bets with harassment of student athletes from bettors a primary concern brought forth.

Other reasons the NCAA gave towards banning bets on college athletes include preventing players from betting on themselves and fixing their statistics, with the NCAA claiming that college athletes could be more prone to be addicted to sports betting.

As of this writing, most sportsbooks available in Ohio have already stopped offering college basketball player prop bets. However, multiple continue to offer a market to bet on who will win the 2024 Heisman Trophy in college football.

College sports betting in Ohio will now only be limited to betting on team props, game outcomes, and total points in games. According to the OCCC, only 1.35% of sports wagers made in Ohio in 2023 were on college player props.
