CHILLICOTHE, Ohio (WCMH) — A local humane society is offering a cash reward for information after a dog was set on fire and killed in Ross County.

King, a pit bull, died on Feb. 8 in the 1400 block of Camelin Hill in Chillicothe, according to the Ross County Humane Society. An autopsy at Ohio State University confirmed King’s cause of death was most likely an arsonist setting him on fire. With the Ross County Dog Warden, the humane society is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of those involved in the suspected arson incident.

“In my 10 years here, I think I’ve seen the worst of the worst and then something like this happens,” said Jenn Thomas, executive director of the Ross County Humane Society. “It’s senseless and cruel, and I hope that someone will come forward with information so we can get some sort of justice for King.”

The humane society noted that a second dog was discovered dead several days later, left on the same property’s porch. The cause of death hasn’t been determined for this dog, who was a smaller breed, as of Monday.

The case remains under investigation, and the humane society is urging anyone with information to come forward by contacting the Ross County Dog Warden at 740-772-5929 or the Ross County Sheriff’s Department at 740-773-1186.
