I found it deeply ironic that the liturgical theme at the Catholic mass I attended on Sept. 16 was mercy and compassion. This just days after the revelation that the bishop and his Cleveland posse had issued a gag order on all things gay or transgender in Catholic schools – an order totally lacking in mercy and compassion, let alone common sense.
Meanwhile, the Cleveland bishop and his allies in Cincinnati and Columbus have seen fit to donate almost $1 million to the lobbyists and political operatives seeking to defeat Issue 1 on the November ballot, cleveland.com’s Andrew J. Tobias reported in July. Money that could have been used to deliver real mercy and compassion to vulnerable people among us who desperately need it.
“The Lord is kind and merciful,” the cantor sang at the mass I attended. I couldn’t help thinking: Too bad the bishops aren’t as well.
