ROCKY RIVER, Ohio — A beloved Greater Cleveland pastry shop has made it to the quarter-finals of a national baking competition that benefits charity.

Kathy’s Kolacke and Pastry Shop at 19032 Old Detroit Road in Rocky River is competing in Baked from Scratch Magazine’s The Greatest Baker contest. Owner Kathy Schriner, who has run the local business since 1991, made it through six rounds of voting thus far for a chance to win $10,000.

Schriner learned of the competition via social media, which makes sense as voting for free is verified through Facebook. She figured as a scratch-made baker, she fit the bill for the magazine’s qualifications.

“I didn’t think I’d make it through the first level,” Schriner said. “I guess I have a lot of fans out there that I didn’t know about, which is really cool.”

The contest raises money through donation-based votes to benefit the Andrew McDonough B+ Foundation, a non-profit that provides support for families of children with cancer and funds research to find cures.

While the contest already benefits charity, Schriner said she would donate a portion of her winnings to City Dogs Cleveland to continue giving back to a local cause. Then, she plans to use her winnings to take a trip to California to visit her brother.

“I would love to represent Cleveland in this contest,” Schriner said of the possibility of winning. Additionally, she’s been pleasantly surprised with how many dedicated customers vote for her daily and continue to support her throughout the contest.

“The communities around here are amazing,” Schriner said.

It’s important to note that fans can only vote once per day for their favorite baker. Schriner pointed out the process can be tricky online, as fans must verify their profiles to ensure their vote is counted, but it’s only a couple of added steps.

You can vote for Kathy’s Kolacke and Pastry Shop to be crowned Baked from Scratch Magazine’s The Greatest Baker here. The next round of voting ends 10 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 18, to decide which contestants make it to the semi-finals.
