CLEVELAND, Ohio – Is it really about to snow in Cleveland? Odds are yes, according to the latest forecasts. In fact, 2 to 4 inches could fall in parts of Northeast Ohio by the end of Sunday.
The National Weather Service is calling for a chance of snow overnight and Sunday, with the chance running as high as 90% in Cleveland.
A winter weather advisory issued Saturday afternoon said snow was expected between 1 a.m. and 10 p.m. Sunday, along with wind gusts of up to 35 mph for Ashtabula, Cuyahoga, Lake, Portage and Summit counties.
“Plan on slippery road conditions. Patchy blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility,” the advisory said.
Any snow on the ground likely will be short-lived. Sunday’s low is predicted to be 30 degrees in Cleveland, followed by a Monday high of 49 degrees, and highs Tuesday and Wednesday in the low 60s.
This has been an unusually warm and nearly snow-free winter by northern Ohio standards.
The last recorded snow at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport was on Feb. 29, and that was just two-tenths of an inch.
There was 3.5 inches of snow in February, 9.7 inches in January (6.9 of that on one day), 2.2 inches in December, 3.1 inches in November and 1.5 inches in November.
Through Friday, the average temperature in Cleveland was running 14.4 degrees above normal for March, after a February in which the average temperature was 6.9 degrees above normal, and a January when the average was 1.7 degrees above normal.
