Father Time has some sobering advice for Baby New Year in the editorial cartoon gallery’s lead image by Dana Summers: “Fasten your seat belt and make sure your airbag is working.” Looks like the 2024 model will be quite a ride.

The arrival of the new year also inspires comments from Joel Pett on the high hopes and realities of New Year’s resolutions; a “wildly preposterous notion” from Bill Bramhall for peace on Earth, good will toward men; and a robot baby displacing the obsolete real thing from Steve Breen.

Editorial cartoonists also commented on presidential politics: President Joe Biden’s border troubles; Nikki Haley’s gaffe on slavery and the Civil War; the unpopularity of Ron DeSantis in Iowa; former President Donald Trump’s crowded legal calendar; and state efforts to remove Trump from the primary ballot by invoking the Constitution’s insurrection clause.

Other topics in this week’s gallery include Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas’s gifts; the precarious state of Ukraine as U.S. military aid runs out; deepening misery in Gaza; democratic institutions teetering like a game of Jenga; the insatiable artificial intelligence monster; and a selection of Walt Handelsman’s best of 2023, including riffs on the Freedom Caucus, peace under siege, Trump’s legal troubles and gravity-defying popularity and Biden’s flip-flops on border security.

Cartoons were drawn by Jack Ohman, Nick Anderson, Bill Bramhall, Dana Summers, Drew Sheneman, Walt Handelsman, David Horsey, Joel Pett and Joey Weatherford of Tribune Content Agency; and Mike Luckovich, Steve Breen and Michael Ramirez of Creators Syndicate.
