CLEVELAND, Ohio — The New York auction house Phillips announced Monday it will hold a sale Wednesday, October 11, of 40 works from the photography collection of Clevelanders Fred and Laura Bidwell.

Artists whose works will be offered for sale include Kehinde Wiley, Dawoud Bey, Zanele Muholi, Hank Willis Thomas, Ann Hamilton, Andrew Moore, Paul Mpagi Sepuya, and others.

The Bidwells are known in Cleveland for having established the Transformer Station Gallery in Cleveland’s Hingetown neighborhood in 2013 as a collaborative project with the Cleveland Museum of Art. For a decade, the Bidwells organized exhibitions based on creative projects with artist or selections from their own collection, alternating with exhibitions organized by the museum. The couple transferred ownership of the gallery to the museum earlier this year.

Fred Bidwell said in an interview with Cleveland.com and The Plain Dealer that the sale at Phillips is intended to generate money for philanthropy in Cleveland benefiting recipients including the Cleveland Foundation, the Cleveland Museum of Art, and the FRONT International Cleveland Triennial for Contemporary Art, which Bidwell launched in 2018. The next triennial is scheduled for 2025.

Bidwell described the selection of works to be sold as “a small slice” of the couple’s total collection, which numbers over 1,000 objects.

A Phillips news release quoted Bidwell as having said: “Laura and I are excited to show a slice of our collection and give an opportunity for other collectors to be a part of the lifecycle of these incredible photographs that we’ve loved throughout the years.’’

He added, “Photography has never lost its fascination for the two of us with its unique ability to capture a moment of reality and time. Our collecting journey was always about the things we loved — that lightning-strike moment when you see something that resonates so clearly within you. That energy is felt throughout these works, the tension between the material and the conceptual being felt in each piece, and it is our hope that this energy can go on to capture the minds of others as they did for us.”
