CLEVELAND, Ohio – Akron will extend its hours at the Summit Lake Community Center, which doubles as a warming center.
The community center will be open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday through Tuesday to give residents relief from the cold. The Summit Lake Community Center is at 380 W. Crosier St. in Akron.
All other community centers will be open during their normal business hours for the holiday weekend.
The Emergency Overnight Shelter located at 111 E. Voris St. will be open Saturday through Monday, Jan. 22. The shelter operates between 7 p.m. and 8 a.m.
It provides food and clothing for community members in need. The shelter is a partnership between the Peter Maurin Center, Summit County Continuum of Care and Community Support Services.
Akron Mayor Shammas Malik said the city will monitor temperatures in the days ahead to determine if hours need to be extended further.
“With frigid temperatures setting in this weekend, we want to make sure everyone has somewhere to go to keep warm and be out of the elements,” Malik said in a statement. “I applaud the efforts of the organizations collaborating on the emergency overnight shelter to keep folks sheltered during the coldest periods at night. We’ve set our hours to correspond with theirs so that no matter the time, residents will have somewhere to go.”
