COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — A full service taproom experimenting with AI as a tool for beer brewing is now open in Columbus.

The new brewery — Species X Beer Project — is open after a soft launch Thursday. It is located at 408 N. 6th St. in Columbus. Founder and head brewer Beau Warren is “exploring uncharted territory” to craft two series of beers, according to a news release.

The two distinct series of beers featured at Species X include the following:

  • The silicon species: originates from intelligence and machine learning, building unique models to generate novel beer recipes within human-engineered guardrails
  • The carbon species: includes fermentation methods novel and ancient, such as yeast hybridization, genetic engineering, mutagenesis, novel capture and spore gemination

Both Species X series will be launched with three beers, ranging from a light, crisp lager to a unique triple IPA. The early beer release will be quickly followed by a Species X collaboration with author Jon Krohn, who works in the field of machine learning and hosts the SuperDataScience podcast.

The taproom features garage doors that open up to an outside patio with a rooftop deck that has a view of the Columbus skyline. Inside, guests can observe the production process with a behind-the-scenes look of the brewery’s operations.

The Species X taproom is open from Wednesday to Sunday and serves beer, spirits, wine and a food menu. On Feb. 8, Species X will be celebrating its opening with a launch party that will be open to guests from 5 to 8 p.m.
