CLEVELAND, Ohio — A 30-year-old woman was run over early Sunday morning near her apartment in downtown Cleveland, and the driver fled the scene, police say.

According to Cleveland Police, the incident happened around 2:30 a.m. in the 1300 block of West 9th Street and St. Clair. Lew Bodee told cleveland.com that his daughter, Elyse Bodee, was declared dead on arrival. Her identity was also confirmed by the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner.

Bodee said he was told that his daughter fell into the street near her apartment and was run over by a black SUV that had been playing loud music as it headed down St. Clair Avenue.

“An officer from Cleveland knocked on our door at 5:30 this morning,” he said.

Bodee added that he felt numb, like he is living in a bad dream and noted that his wife is “beside herself.”

Elyse, a Seven Hills native, was engaged and was set to be married this month in Key West. Her father added that she had an associate’s degree from Cuyahoga Community College and had been working at Cordelia, a historic restaurant on East Fourth Street, which she loved.

He described Elyse as a daddy’s girl, who was “very personable, bubbly, happy,” with a humorous side adding he would send her “dad jokes” everyday.

Bodee wonders why the driver did not stop.

“What made you feel that you needed to flee? Were you drinking or you were afraid of the consequences? And was that more important than someone lying in the street?” he asked. “Do the right thing, turn yourself in. And if anyone knows about it, please come forward.

“It’s a horrible thing. You’re not supposed to outlive your child.”

The incident is currently under investigation. Cleveland police say there are no further details available at this time.
