CORNING, Iowa – After collecting cars since he was a teen, 78-year-old Robert Sorensen has decided to sell. That means more than 100 vehicles he’s collected from every decade from the 1930s to 1990s will be on the auction block.
The auction, beginning at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 30, will be conducted at the Adams County Speedway in Corning by VanDerBrink Auctions. Bids may also be placed online.
“Roger and his family have been collectors of classics for years,” the auction house said. “There was not a car that Roger did not like and it rubbed off on his family. It was a family affair and cars and car shows were an event with the Sorensen’s.”
For Roger, it started when he was 14 and he traded a horse for a Ford Model A.
“It’s kind of an addictive thing. I had one, then thought I might as well have two and on from there,” he told KCCC TV in Des Moines.
The list of what’s for auction shows he had varied tastes.
There’s Chevys, Fords, Pontiacs, Oldsmobile, Packards, AMC and others. The vehicles range from sedans and sports cars to microvans and pickups.
They range from restored vehicles and originals in good shape to projects and parts cars, VanDerBrink said.
Sorensen intends to keep a few vehicles for old times sake, but realized it was time to downsize.
“I finally decided I can only drive one car at a time,” Sorensen said.
